Southern Polytechnic State University

Another visit to Southern Poly University for junior and senior final thesis juries. I am in the fore ground next to Bill Carpenter, Oscar Harris and, Dean of Architecture, Dr. Bill Barnes.

The Welcomer

This was anonymously written on the side walk along South McDonough Street in front of the Daulton House to be. I'm not sure you would find this sort of reception anywhere but in the South — and given the seemingly adversarial roles of historic commissions and municipal building departments (whether justified or not), not to mention obstinant neighbors, it was heartening for me and the Daultons to discover this whimsical gesture. Kindness is incredibly inexpensive for what it accomplishes. It's so important to us that we contribute to this community and in addition to building a home, build relations.

Carriage House Mono Slab Foundation

Because of the narrowness of the Dalton lot (50'), and the added obstacle of the tree bridge, it was a logistical call to put the Carriage House foundation in prior to beginning the house foundation. It was this same train of thought that led us to install the bridge before the house; once in place the house foundation would prevent access to any other substantial site element.

Building Permit Acquired/Tree Bridge Installation

We submitted for the Daulton House building permit on Feb. 26th and received the permit on March 26th. For Future Reference: Upon submittal, Rick Logan met with me and went over the plans to make sure basic ordinances were satisfied. Once the City receives a submittal, it's rare for it to be kicked back. Special requirements unique to a particular plan are commonly notated as the permit is granted. The City's goal is to turn the permit process around in a 14 workday cycle.
